This score is this site's own. It measures how accessible the lottery is without a large balance — not the chance that you will win. The same calculation is used on the Japanese pages.

The rules here

💰Upfront deposit

The cash must be in your account by 18:00 on the day the offer price is set. It is not needed when you apply.

🎯How the lottery works

Of the online allocation, 60% is drawn in proportion to the number of shares you applied for, 30% goes to whoever spends the most points, and 10% is at the broker's discretion.

🎁Its own scheme

IPO Challenge Points. You earn one point every time you lose a lottery.

🆓Fees

None, either to enter the lottery or to buy the shares.

From applying to owning

  1. Apply during book building

Confirm you have viewed the prospectus and apply online within the application period. No money is needed at this point.

  2. Fund the account by 18:00 on the pricing day

You need buying power of at least the offer price multiplied by the number of shares you applied for. Fall short and you are excluded from the draw.

  3. Check the result

The draw runs after 18:00. If you lose, you earn one IPO Challenge Point.

  4. Confirm that you want to buy

If you win, or are placed in reserve, you must complete the purchase step before the deadline.

  5. Wait for the listing day

Once the purchase is settled, there is nothing more to do until trading opens.

Worth knowing before you apply

  • If you win or are placed in reserve and do not complete the purchase step, it counts as declining. There is no suspension for declining, but any IPO Challenge Points you spent on that application are gone.
  • 60% of the lottery allocation is weighted by how many shares you applied for, so a larger balance genuinely does improve your odds in that portion. With a small balance, accumulating points is the realistic route.

Who this suits

  • People who want one broker to build everything else around, because it handles the most listings
  • People willing to accumulate losses as points and eventually aim at a popular listing
  • People opening their first account, expecting to add more brokers later

Why this one

It handles among the highest number of IPOs in the industry, so you can apply for most of the companies listing in a given year. It is unusual to find a listing this broker is not underwriting, which maximises the number of draws you are in.

Every time you lose a lottery you earn one IPO Challenge Point. Spending those points enters you into a separate pool covering 30% of the online allocation, where shares go to whoever spent the most points. Lose consistently and you build toward a listing you actually want. If you lose again, the points come back and you earn another one on top.

No money is required at the moment you apply. What matters is the deadline: the offer price multiplied by your application must be in the account by 18:00 on the pricing day, or the application is void.

About the company

The core securities business of the SBI group and the largest online broker in Japan. A single account covers Japanese shares, investment trusts, the NISA tax-free scheme and US stocks, and it is among the leaders in both account numbers and product range.

Trading fees

Commission on Japanese share trading is zero if you meet conditions such as opting into electronic delivery of documents. So the account you open for IPOs is also inexpensive to use for ordinary trading afterwards.
