What stands out

  • It has a track record of drug discovery partnerships using its PepMetics technology with Japanese and overseas pharmaceutical companies, including Eisai and Ono Pharmaceutical
  • Two candidates are in clinical trials (Phase 2): the cancer drug candidate E7386 (Eisai) and the liver cirrhosis drug candidate PRI-724 (Ohara Pharmaceutical)
  • It held about 2.33 billion yen in cash and deposits at the end of June 2026

What could go wrong

  • It has been loss-making both before and after listing (net loss of about 830 million yen in the year to September 2025), so it may raise more money for research and development in future, for example by issuing new shares
  • Revenue swings widely depending on when upfront and milestone payments arrive. The jump in revenue for the year to September 2025 includes a one-off recognition of fees following the end of its contract with Eli Lilly
  • No earnings forecast has been disclosed for the year to September 2026, as the company says it cannot calculate one reasonably

About the company

A drug discovery venture in Fujisawa, Kanagawa that uses its own PepMetics technology to create drug candidates that block protein-to-protein binding, and develops them with pharmaceutical companies.

How it makes money

It earns money by offering its technology and libraries of candidate compounds to pharmaceutical companies for joint research, and by licensing out drug candidates it discovers (handing over the rights to develop and sell them), receiving joint research fees, upfront payments and milestone payments as development progresses. Two candidates are in clinical trials, both in Phase 2: E7386, a cancer drug candidate being developed by Eisai, and PRI-724, a liver cirrhosis drug candidate licensed to Ohara Pharmaceutical.

Where growth is meant to come from

Alongside joint research on its partners' targets, it is putting effort into in-house programmes, where it chooses drug targets itself, creates candidate compounds and licenses them out to pharmaceutical companies, with several programmes aimed at cancer, fibrosis, obesity and metabolic disease and other conditions. Because revenue depends on when contracts with pharmaceutical companies are signed, the company has not disclosed an earnings forecast for the year to September 2026.
